My name is Luke Tortorella. I'm the total reward specialist here at Wilson. I'm located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I've been in the human resources space for about five years.
Yes, so I actually started out in recruiting and I did that for about a year and that was able to give me exposure to the other facets of HR, such as employee relations, benefits, compensation, all of those types of things. And so with that exposure, I was able to pivot more into those workings of human resources.
I would say one of the things with my career is that I wasn't necessarily like looking to get into HR when I first started, but it was one of those things that when I started in recruiting and started getting the exposure to the other faucets of HR that that really is kind of what influenced me to make pivot. call myself a true HR generalist because I've really worked in almost every single space of it.
I am a pretty communicative person. So that has definitely helped me a lot. And then also being, being able to adapt because things can, you know, turn upside down very quickly and, you know, restart. being adaptable has been really one of the top keys for me.
I would say being intentional. That is really one of the, if not the most important one, just being intentional. And then of course the other ones follow suit with that, but really that is where the foundation is built.
So for me, every day is different. Everything can change on a dime. you never know what the day holds, which keeps me, you know, very motivated, but also excited.
It's kind of a three piece part. So I would say first off, you need to be very communicative, definitely. Again, you need to be intentional. And then also you need to have empathy. In the human resources space, you're dealing with, you know, all types of employees and they are coming to you as being a subject matter expert, especially for things such as benefits, know, retirement, anything like that, you know, you just need to be able to put yourself in that person's situation. And I really think that helps, flow things together and really allows you to make an intentional decision then.
Just the overall mission, the more that I had spoken to employees and throughout my interview process, just got me so excited about what's going on here, especially from the global aspect. Things are moving very quickly and it really got me excited about what we're doing here and I really wanted to be a part of it.
So I would say really, just growing that upward trajectory, you know, more responsibilities, more initiatives that we can take, especially from, the human resources, benefits, compensation, those types of things. So really just, leading that initiative.
Just to keep growing. We have such a global footprint on everything that I'm just very excited to see where we continue to go.
